Why is there a worm in Tequila bottles?!

Question:

Why is there a worm in Tequila bottles?

Isnt that kinda germy?

Answers:
There are no worms in tequila bottles; there are worms in Metzcal bottles. They supposedly act as sponge/ filter for impurities.

But there isn't...I believe you mean Mescal. And no it's not "germy"...the one to have the last drink must swallow it!

I'm still alive!

We do buy it in bottles of Tequila. And - it has to do with a game. Every one takes a drink from the bottle (in small shot glasses). The bottle goes around and around the group, the person who gets the last shot of tequila has to eat or swallow the worm or they are a chicken.

That's the story I've always been told. I buy that for my sons when I visit Mexico - (don't freak) they are close to 30 each and when they play cards with their buddies, they like to throw that game in.

It's kinda like a fear factor thing - Can you eat the worm? Ha

Next time you fly, maybe ask for an airline size one-ounce bottle of Mezcal, and each one has its own worm.

it is put into bottles of metzcal not tequilla, (think cheap tequilla when thinking of metzcal) it is so low scale on the drinkign charts that traditionally you didnt trust the guy selling the bottle that it was hard liquor sometimes. so they dropped a worm in it and it drowns in the metzcal due to the high alcohol content in the drink, thus proving it was hard liquor.

the worms are actually larvae of some sort that grow in the agave plants used to create the mezcal. one brand even uses the worms as a selling point- dos gusanos, which translates to "two worms". it is the most disgusting and foul booze i have ever tasted in my life. my buddy ate one of the worms, and i filmed it. we were pretty drunk at the time. that stuff smelled/tasted like/probably was some piss. just google 'dos gusanos'.

The worms are used to prove the potency of the liquor. If it wasn't potent enough, the worm would start to decompose. But since the alcohol content is high enough, it is preserved instead.
