Guess it depends on the situation. If you guys go out to a restaurant, then you should be able to order whatever you want without feeling like you're offending your friend.
If you invite him to your house and serve him pork chops and chablis, that's rude.
If you go to his house and pull out a bag of pork rinds and a Schlitz Malt Lickety Bull and start scarfing and glugging, that's WAAAAAY over the line.
