Why is it so hard to find French wine in the U.S. ?!

Question:

Why is it so hard to find French wine in the U.S. ?

I have been all around my local area (D.C./Baltimore), and have found an abundance of foreign wines - Australian, Italian, Spanish, South African, ect. But for the life of me, I don't think I have found a single bottle of French. Is there a reason for this (...something that has to do with freedom fries perhaps?)? It is odd that I can't find wine from a country that is known globally for their wines, but I can from countries which are not known at all (Chilean anyone?)

Answers:

You are probably not going to the right places. There are plenty of French wines available in the DC/Baltimore area, and some very knowledgeable merchants. In the Baltimore area try Bin 604, next to the Wholefoods in Fells Point, and that place in the Can Company in the Canton Neighborhood. There is also Wells on York Rd which has a pretty good selection. If you don't mind driving across the Bay Bridge, I know of two very good liquor stores whose owners know what they are talking about, and go out of their way to have a good selection of wines. Those places are Love Point Deli & Spirits in Stevensville, MD (ask for Mitch) and Baker's Liquors just down the St. (ask for John).
