Answers:

I'd suggest a Pinot Noir. Pinot is fruity, light body, but with good complexity. It is not tannic/bitter like Cabernet or Merlot, not as spicy as Syrah or Petit Syrah, and usually lighter than Zinfandel.

I would suggest mid price Pinot Noir. Personal favorite includes Flower ($30-40), Etude ($45), Siduri ($25-50), Penner Ashe ($40), Hartfort Court ($40). Sadly, I don't like cheaper Pinot Noir, since they taste like watered-down merlot, but mid range in $30-50 are delicious.
