Answers:

It is very important for you to know at least something about the available wine and drink list in your restaurant. After that, you are the salesperson of those products.

As a result, you are actually very important, both to the restaurant as well as to the liquor/wine reps. You can help make and break a certain products. Being that I know a lot of in and out of restaurant wine business, I know that there is a lot of education from the restaurant and wine salesperson to the staff about wines. Many of the finer restaurants will have staff meeting once in a while to educate waiters on the wines. In addition, wine reps will come in with their cases of wine to introduce their wines to the staff.

These are great ways to learn about wines. In addition, you have to do some homework. Ask your sommeliers and head waiters about wines - these are experienced staff members who have been there, so they can teach you about wines and how to properly serve/present wine. Also, read a couple of books - Wine for Dummies and Idiot Guide to Wines, as well as possibly keep up with wine magazines such as Wine Spectators/Wine Advocate, etc, some of those may be on display at the waiting area of your restaurant. In addition, local grocery stores and liquor stores may have free wine tasting, which may be fun. Also, a lot of waiters go out after work to drink, and that is a good way to learn what they like and what they can teach you.

If you learn about wine and drink, it will make you a better waitress and help you open up the future in higher ladder of restaurant business as well as possibly in wine sales or other wine related businesses.
