Safe alcohol limits....absurd ?!
Safe alcohol limits....absurd ?
Not content with the more sensible measures to kerb binge drinking, the government are trying to encourage us all to drink less, stating that the 'safe' weekly limit is 14 units for women and 21 for men. This is a bottle and a bottle and a half of wine respectively. This probably means that 95% of the French population is at risk, along with the majority of Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians and Greeks. Are they just a bunch of irresponsible boozy continentals, or do you think that maybe our nanny state has got it's sums wrong ?
Answers:
Yes - sick and tired of being dictated to. They now want to increase the cost of alcohol (todays press) and stop promotions in supermarkets to curb the cost to the NHS. What business is it of anyone elses if I want to risk my health by drinking too much. I have worked all my life and paid my taxes and national insurance and so I am bloody well entitled medical treatment if I need it. Shall we apply the same to motorists who need major surgery after crashing their car whilst driving over the speed limit. What about sports injuries or DIY enthusiasts who cut their fingers off through their own negligence. The government can go and boil its head - if they try and price me out I will simply nip through the tunnel to France and get it there.
Good question - thanks - it has let me have a good rant. Have a star
The Europeans you mentioned are drinking "Wine" there's a big difference between Beer and Wine! Americans drink Beer and Hard liquors, mainly Bourbon Whiskey. That's by far harsher than what our European counterparts endure! We can drink them under the table any day...except maybe the Germans! My hat's off to them! By the way, maybe you are accustomed to Wine? But only 7% of Americans drink it and most only drink it during ceremonies!

I agree with you calling this absurb. There are so many other things that must be factor in, such as age, weight, tolerance levels to mention a few. One healthy male can drink three glasses of wine and it not have half the effect one glass could mean to another.
All I know is now I can't wait to get off work so I can go have a DRINK!
it's different from person to person. i guess it's ok when you woke up next day in YOUR bed..
They are not saying it is dangerous to drink more than this.
They are saying that you can drink those amounts with no adverse short term or long term effects on your health.
These are two very different things. Most people can probably drink quite a bit more with no ill effects.
And you've got your units muddled. A typical bottle of wine (13 - 14% abv) contains about 10 units of alcohol.
It's very fashionable to rubbish this as 'nanny state', but it's only advice. No one is forcing you to take it. Surely we want the medical authorities to give us their professional opinion, then decide our own lifestyle based on knowledge, not ignorance.
The Nanny State has its own agenda
The ideal"citizen of the UK"stays in his tiny house, smoking tax paid cigarettes, drinking a minimum amount of supermarket booze, and watching govt.propaganda on the TV
He doesn't go out apart from work, because groups of people lead to ideas, and ideas lead to revolution
Personally, I've had two bottles of wine tonight and I feel great. Feck the government or whatever they call themselves.
I still type very well.
Although I am dribbling.
