What is the best red wine you have ever had? What was it like?

Answers:
First of all, the best wines in the world would be wasted without a meal.
I shared a bottle of 1998 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Reserve over a meal of braised short ribs at Sage in Newport Beach, CA. The wine was dense and concentrated (meaning lots of flavor in not so much liquid) with good fruit and nice secondary flavors of leather and tar and it was oh so smooth--like drinking silk. Very good with the meal. The main things I look for in a red are that it does not overpower the meal (not too fruity), it tastes good, and it feels good going down your throat (not too much alcohol or fermentation taste and not too watery or thin).
Best of all, the wine was not terribly expensive compared to its peers ($80 at Hi Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa) and the meal was not terribly expensive either, considering it's in Newport ($140 for apertifs, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 1 dessert including tax and tip).
This is the kind of thing I can only do maybe twice or three times a year, but it makes the occasion that much more special. You really remember everything more vividly and with more fondness when a great bottle of wine is around.
A good wine leaves such an impression with you that you remember how it tastes the next day when you're bored at work.
I have found two truly wonderfull reds during my wine adventures; Villa Antinori (Chianti) and Chateau St. Michelle 1996 Reserve Merlot. The Villa had the robust body I expect out of a Chianti with a reasonably clean finish which made it very drinkable. The Reserve goes beyond my ability to describe... It is my gauge by which all other wines are measured. If you can find it, drink it excessively.

A non-Commercial, Home-Made Chianti, in a little Village just outside of Rome ....... I have enjoyed Wines all over the world, but I always remember this one, because I drank it every day for over a week and each glassful tasted exactly like the first, and with no chemicals, filtering, sediment, only the naturally occuring Sugars, marvelous after-taste, smooth, rich and brilliant color ....... worth the expense of a return trip just to experience it again .......
Well, even though I like Red wine, my palate isn't that developed and I have a hard time identifying distinct flavors. Once, however, I had a Santa Ema Cabernet Sauvignon(Chilean wine, 1998 great reserve, had won a medal) and it was just marvelous, it had kind of a velvet feel to it and a distinct chocolate flavor.
1980 something Georges de Latour Cab Sauv from Napa Valley. had it with a big cut of prime rib. It was heaven in a glass with the steak.
Fat Bastard Shiraz- full bodied, pleasant, and very fruity. I buy it at the Whole Foods Market as part of my regular wine purchases. Everyone that I tell about it, becomes addicted too. It is GOOD.
Stone Valley merlot medium body and a very good fruity taste like blueberries.
