Is dirt (i think it's dirt) on wine cork normal? Should I return the bottle?!

Question:

Is dirt (i think it's dirt) on wine cork normal? Should I return the bottle?

I bought a bottle of wine, Merlot 2001 and well, when I opened the bottle, when pulling out the cork it had some residues, and I guess it could be residues for being stored so long. However i know, that It also looks like dirt, is that possible? (I'm new into wine) Well, it's 2001 but still It should not have anything right?

Answers:

It's not dirt or mold, and don't pour it over anyones head, residue is normal in wine and that is why they started the tradition that men tasted the wine first, so the ladies wouldn't get the residue if there were any. You'll often notice at the bottom of the bottle and you glass at times there is a bit of residue. Wine is made from grapes and they have pulp and skin that will find it's way into a bottle or two. It is alcohol so anything in there will be sterilized so don't worry.
