its the content of alcohol. its short of single shot and double shot. single shot is one shot of alcohol in a mix drink. double is double the amount. i dont remember the exact amount like 1.5 liters or something im probably way off but Im not good with amounts. lol.

A single and double shot
Generally a single shot is 30mL, a double is 60mL.

Whiskey is a "malt" Liquor... so if you are wanting a double malt or a single malt- they vary greatly in price. There is also the double shot and single shot, but when ordering it's taken for granted that you get a single shot and a single malt if you are ordering simply a whiskey.... you have to tell the bartender if you are wanting a double malt or double shot.

1.0 fluid oz. or 30 mL is a shot(single)
2.0 fluid oz. or 60 mL is a double

There is no such thing as a double malt whisky!

When you say make it a double it refers to a double shot. In other words they double the amount of whisky that would normally be in the drink.

When refering to malt whiskies (whisky made from malted grain) there is malt whisky, single malt, and cask malt whisky. These are in contrast to grain whisky which is made from unmalted grains. Single malt whisky means that the whisky has come from one distillery, it is not blended. Malt whisky is a blend of different distillers/barrels/batches to make a more well rounded whisky. Cask malt means a single malt directly from the barrel, very high alcohol content, it is not proofed.

There is not a "double malt", any whisky that is blended from different batches is refered to as malt, not "double malt"! This is a very common (and very annoying) mistake

Single = 1 peg = 30ml.
Double = 2 pegs = 60ml.
