Why does Greasy food assist with a hangover?!

Question:

Why does Greasy food assist with a hangover?

Just curious. When I was in college, and a completely different person than I am now, if I drank too much the night before, when I woke up with a hangover, I would eat a couple of big macs and drink some poweraid and I was good to go. If I tried to eat a healthy breakfast it didnt help...only fast food did. any idea why?

Good question, but you ask it in vain. No one knows exactly what is the physiology of the hangover. Look on Yahoo Answers for "hangover cures" and you will see about as many opinions on the etiology of the hangover as there are cures. But to give your question a shot, consider the three main causes of hangover 1) dehydration 2) poisoning by metallic congeners such as zinc placed in the alcohol to give it a sweeter taste, and fusel oils which are the result of impartially broken down alcohol 3) massive vitamin loss.

Now what does ingesting grease do? Nothing really for the above. My guess is that it was the high carbs in the Bic Mac that did it. Carbs give you an insulin spike which allows your body to process sugars. My guess is that this spike helps mop up the partially processed booze in your system and so cleans it of painful poisons.

I have to agree with ya on this subject.
I don't know what it is but greasy chicken strips and fries the morning after always makes me feel better after a drinks bender.

Actually the grease acts as a gentle coating to the stomach walls and helps to neutralize the build up of acids that can result from over-consumption of alcohol.

I always tried to have a big (and greasy!) breakfast the next day.......worked like a charm!

I imagine that the Powerade did more to speed your recovery than the greasy food.

When you drink heavily you lose a lot of water, sugar and vitamins that your body needs. The Powerade replaces much of these and helps to bring your body back to normal.
