Sometimes public water comes from deep wells and can contain organic contaminants. Most are harmless and cause no problems other than taste and odor issues.
Surface water can sometimes take on a organic taste at different times of the years.
Your biggest source of information would be the local water provider. Be forewarned, these range from large municipal suppliers to small private companies. And everywhere in between. Some are really concerned about issues like this and others could care less as long as the water passes the lab tests.
Often, a water meter may be on what is called a dead end, meaning the line it is tapped on to ends and does not recirculate back into the system. Such a line can hold stale water and water that has lost its disinfection properties, allowing bacteria to grow.
Ask the water company if they can flush the main line you are tapped to. Some will. If it is a dead end, they are probably required to (in Texas we are required to flush each dead end once a month). But this is often not done.
Ask the water company for their Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) for the last year. The are required by federal law to provide this to all customers each year and when asked for. The CCR shows regulated items and in what amount they appear in the water they provide. Take this to your pediatrician and see what they say.

Call the health department? Is she on city water or does she have a well?
Can she get the baby the ready-made formula until she gets the water problem resolved?
If she absolutely has to use the water for the baby's formula, BOIL IT FIRST!
Good luck!
Don't drink it! Does she have a landlord she can complain to? Maybe she should call the city about it. she should atleast boil the water before mixing it with the baby's formula.
1. call the city
2. get a different water filter to see if it helps
3. get the ready made formula so her baby don't get sick
Perhaps your friend should have all the plumbing bringing the water into the house checked. If the source of the water is a well, that needs to be checked also. If it's a public system, your friend might call them and report the problem-they can troubleshoot. Also, perhaps a second filtration system-one of those filtered water pitchers or a countertop unit might help too-in addition to the filter on the tap.
don't drink it !! call the water department.that is gross.
If she has a well then she should call and have the water tested. City water, she should call the water department. It could also be old pipes that are adding rust to the water.
For herself and the baby, if she can’t afford bottled water, the water should be boiled, and then ran through a Britta or other filter before drinking or cooking with it.
Ok...first call the water department and tell them what's going on.
Second, for a 2 month old she needs to boil the water anyways unless it's bought pre-packaged/bottled. Sorry the water costs too much, but she is going to have to buy it, at least for the baby until she can get this fixed. Being a Mommy is expensive and there is no way around that. We Mommies have to make sacrifices so that our kids get what they need. If the water dept. doesn't come out right away, tell the land lord to call a plumber, or if she owns the house she will need to call a plumber. I'm sorry. Babies cost money. That's just the way it is. On the up side though, all babies have rights and if she can get water no other way then tell her to ask the hospital or health dept. for some water for her baby.
i work for a notable plumbing company in central florida called Tropical Plumbing & Septic, Inc.. i work in the septic department. but becuase i'm a mother too i wasnt about to pass this question by. the filter on the faucet wont make a difference at all for this problem. our water treatment specialist recomments the following
#1 .. if it is city water you shouldn't be experienceing this problem. if you are then i would call your water company or landlord about it. and boil all water until this problem is sovled.
#2 ... if this is well water the taste is from the iron that is in the water. the iron is of no harm to baby or any person. the iron does make the water feel "hard" and "taste" gross. also you should check to see if you have water treatment for the home. if not you should contact the landlord about the water or call your local plumbing company about options for water treatment.
