A martini is a great drink, in fact I think that a well made martini is one of the best drinks out there.
To start you want to chill your glass. An easy way to do this is to add some ice and a little bit of soda water to it. Another way is to add crushed ice or stick it in the freezer for a few minutes.
Next, take your shaker or mixing glass and add a lot of ice to it. A good martini needs to be served cold.
The typical recipe is 3 parts gin to 1 part dry vermouth. The less vermouth there is, the drier the martini is. Some will say that you add the vermouth to the ice, give it a good mix then dump it out. I think this is waste of vermouth, but your milage may vary.
Add these to the ice in your shaker but don't shake it. Whatever you do, never shake a martini and I don't care if that's the way James Bond drinks them, shaking a martini is a travesty.
Instead, give it a gentle stir or if you're in a rush take the shaker and swirl it around a few times. Using an ice strainer, pour the martini into the chilled glass.
Now comes the garnish. Typically it's a twist of lemon or a single olive. If it's a twist, you give it a twist over the martini so the oils shoot across it, then run the twist around the rim before dropping it in the glass. If it's an olive, stick it on a cocktail squewer and put it in the martini.
Other variations are:
Use vodka instead of gin to make a vodka martini.
Use a pickled onion to make the martini a "Gibson".
Use two olives to make the martini a "Franklin".
Add some of the olive brine to make it s a "Dirty Martini".
And if you must shake it, it then becomes a "Bradford".
