the schools can be expensive but i think most of the answers you'll get on here from experienced tenders will be to start at the bottom and work your way up... forget about the schools.
i guess the school is worth it if you don't want to do the crappy initial work, though! i imagine you'd make that money back pretty quickly if you worked at a high traffic bar.
i'd like to try bartending, too, but you really have to like the atmosphere. some bars allow smoking which wouldn't work for me. and don't forget you'll have to deal with a lot of rude drunks!
anyway, good luck!

Bartending school is a waste of time. They don't teach you anything that you can't learn hands on. My suggestion is to find someone that is willing to train you on the job, and go from there. It's a really easy skill to pick up.
Do not waste your time with a school,Learn the basic bar layouts and a few common drinks and get on the job training.I would never hire someone that just got out of one of the schools. They are taught drinks but not real life mixing.Find a bar that will let you start partial shifts to learn the ropes and the more comfortable you get,the faster and better you will become.
If you really want to be a bartender you're best bet is find a neighborhood bar and ask them for a job. Smaller bars have a more relaxed attitude and you'll be able to pick up the trade fairly quickly if you're good with people. Stay out of the Casino trade at all costs. Chances are you'll be a barback for too long and learn to hate the job.
I learned by being behind the bar,you cant get the experience wasting your money on school
