I can't recall a sudden switch from the quart to the 40oz.

I'd say around the "Boyz N the Hood" and "Menace to Society" era. Early 90's.
b/c college students don't care about taste they just want to get drunk.

They are not popular. Only gangstas drink 40's. They keep the brown bag around the bottle.
