I would have the same problem only I wouldnt drink myself unconscious, I would just push through the night until I finally just passed out from exhaustion.

I went to the doctor and it turned out that my thyroid was almost dead. The thyroid releases hormones that regulate your inner clock among other things. Once she got me on daily medication, my sleep pattern evened itself out.

Now with the summer months here and my son not on a school schedule, I naturally reverted back to vampire hours. Pushing through the night either studying or tossing and turning until i finally passed out around 4am. It didnt help that I neglected my thyroid medicine for over a month.

So the doc prescribed low dose Ambien and a drug called Clonazepam because I have Restless Leg Syndrome also. Never to be taken together, one or the other helps me get to bed at a reasonable hour, and gives me up to 8 good hours of sleep. Nether of these medications are habit forming.

Another piece of advice I will give though I should ad the disclaimer that I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV, is to take a big swig of Nyquil about an hour before you want to go to sleep. Its way better than 5 jack and cokes to make you pass out and all these other options will be infinitely easier on your liver!!

In short- go to your doctor, they will be able to presribe something for you thats better than drinking yourself into unconsciousness just to get some sleep.

If you are a moderately spiritual person ( i know this is gonna sound cliche but...) meditation with earphones and some soothing music along with the low dose medication or even the nyquil will work super wonders!

Good luck, from one insomniac to another!
