Did Sam Adams Beer need to get any permission to use the Sam Adams name?!

Question:

Did Sam Adams Beer need to get any permission to use the Sam Adams name?

Like, can I just go and call my beer "Paul Revere"?

Answers:
Well, I believe the guy who founded the company is a descendant of Sam Adams. A name like that can't be copywritten (I assume). I believe there is already a Paul Revere ale though. Maybe you can name it after Patrick Henry with the slogan "I regret I can drink but one beer at a time"

The beer got it's name because Samuel Adams was a Patriot and a brewer. It debuted at the reenactment of the Battle of Lexington on Patriot's Day in 1985. For those of you who don't know about Patriot's day, it's a local holiday to celebrate the beginning of the American Revolution. The Boston Marathon is always held on Patriot's Day.

It is a registered name brand so they had to apply for the name with the Government.
