Wine served in a wedding?!

Question:

Wine served in a wedding?

My brother is getting married end of June, we had this talk of what kind of wine he should serve. He doesn't want to spend a fortune since he has 300 guest. I suggested "2 buck chuck" aka charles shaw. He said that might be tacky. What kind of wine would you serve for under $10? What kind of red wine is good? I like cabernet savignon or pinot noir, but he think merlot is more to other people flavor. What about white wine?

Answers:
We just served 2 buck chuck at a beautiful wedding and .....nobody cared! That's the thing about weddings - for the most part everyone is there because they care about the couple getting married not in the least about what is being served. And let's be honest - if someone doesn't like the wine being served (I assume it's an open bar) or thinks it's tacky then they don't have to drink it and in a broader sense they are focusing on the wrong things. More expensive is not better sometimes its just more expensive. Happy hunting.

Merlot is the safest for everyone! (South African and some italian are cheaper)

Soave (italian white) you're likely to find cheapest.

Go to your local LCBO, they are all trained with this type of information.

What about Arbor mist? As long as it is poured prior to guest arriving no one will ever know! The big bottles are like $6 at most. Just have it for the toast.. people don't drink wine at weddings they drink liquor mostly, maybe some beer. 1 keg is usually enough.

Good luck!

I would serve both, and you can find some fairly decent wines under ten dollars.... even cheaper by the case. Two chardonnays I recommend in this price range are Fetzer Sundial and Kendall Jackson. The Austrialian wines are also quite goid and popular. I would stay away from reds like cabernets because they are so heavy and would go for the lighter merlot.

What he serves at his wedding will depend on what's available to him locally. I live in Quebec and I served Lichette (France), because it has a slight fruit flavor, it's not too dry and people who are not accustomed to drinking wine (most of which will prefer a white wine) can still enjoy it. That is true for both the red and the white for that brand.

Tell him to go around to different restaurants and ask for a glass of their house wine. When he finds one he likes, he can find out what it is and ask the restaurant if he can order it through them or if it's available at the liquor store. Buy it by the box, serve it in decanters on the tables. It's cheaper that way than buying all bottles.

If you can find it in your area, I like Junot. French table wine, comes in red and white, here we get it for just under $10 for the 1 1/2 liter bottle at our Kroger Grocery. For its price it is not a bad wine at all.

Since you are going to buy multi cases of whatever wine you choose, make sure and ask for a discount.

Sounds like it's time for a wine tasting! Local to me, K&L wines has a large tasting every saturday of different wines, all under $20 per bottle. I find that out of the 15 or so I try, maybe two are good. Check your local wine shop for tastings.

You may want to get common varietals to keep people happy: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

I can tell you that when my boss threw the holiday party for our company, they just had two wines, a red and a white, both French, both food friendly and both very drinkable. My guess is that they were both under $20 per bottle. Between $10 and $20 should be your target. Under $10 is very hard to do.

3 wines under $10 that are great: Estancia pinot noir and Blackstone merlot (reds) and Martin-Weyrich Muscatto Allegro(white). PHENOMENAL!

I like the Australian wines offered by The Little Penguin company...

they have wines that may suit whatever food you may be serving, from merlot to cabernet sauvignon to pinot noir to shiraz...

The price point is less than 10 dollars and the wine is good...a neat thing about this company is that a portion of the proceeds go towards the Penguin Foundation, which is in aid of conservation of penguin habitats and the bottles have little penguins on them that, of course, look like little tuxedoed gentlemen...LOL!

above is a chart to figure out exactly how many bottles of wine is needed for any number of guests...

have fun!

Mark West has a very nice Pinot Noir. Red Rock has a tasty Merlot. I think that Mcwilliams Cabernet Sav is also a good choice. As far as a white for a wedding most people ask for Chardonnay actually Mcwilliams is decent. i prefer a nice Savignon Blanc it has more of a fruity taste and goes well with most entree choices. Congrats and have a great day!

if it were me and my own wedding I would serve the following:

Silverado Vineyards or Luna Vineyards Sangiovese for the red.
Silverado Sauv Blanc or Luna Vineyards Pinot Grigio for the white

Schramsberg Blanc De Noirs or Blanc De Blancs for the bubbly. Personally I would do J. Schram from them but I have an unfair advantage being their label vendor at get huge discounts. So would go with the Blanc De Noirs or Blanc De Blancs for a lower price suggestion. Mumm Cuvee M is also nice option.

With the exception of the Schramsberg, most of the wines are $20 or less.

Sangiovese is a nice bridge between the Cab that you like and the Merlot that he likes. Not to harsh, very food friendly.

For white I would go with the Pinot Grigio instead of chardonnay. Chardonnay can be quite heavy.

one of the most consistent wines that is also inexpensive is new zealand Sauvignon blanc. for a red, pinot noir would probably please alot of pople, and in addition he would look like he knew what he was doing to the wine savvy at the wedding. but you wont find a decent bottle of pinot noir for under $15, its the damn "sideways" backlash.
