Drinking alcohol under 18 in the UK?!
Drinking alcohol under 18 in the UK?
there was a story about a woman in the US who got sent to prison because she let kids (16 yr olds) drink alcohol at a party they were hosting. and that got me wondering, when you go to a party at 15/16 in the UK, and have a drink, are you actually breaking the law? obviously not if its your own home, but if you're going to someone elses house are you?
Answers:

not if you have premission from your parents and you are in your own home
No it isn't illegal in the UK but the US have much stricter laws about it.
I believe in the UK that drinking under 16 is legal if you are in your parents' home. At 16 you can order alcohol with a meal in the UK.
i think so but not in your own home.
Well, just to be on the safe side I'd advise any under 18's who fancy a drink to do it in a public place, like their local high street, on a busy summer's eve. It's also a good spot cause that's where the shops are that'll sell you the stuff.
Once you're pissed there's then plenty of big windows for you to smash handy. The locals also like getting abuse from you and there'll be plenty of them around. Don't worry about the cops - they'll be sitting at the quiet end of town smelling each other's farts.
its illegal but evry1 goes 2 house parties and gets plastered.
sory 2 upset u americans but british police have got better things to do like fine people who are doing 31mph in a 30mph area lol
well yes, and it is your respnosibility because you are old enough.
BUT if the adult has bought it for you, then they will get into trouble, or if you bought the alcohol off off someone, they would get into trouble, even if they didnt know you were underage, because they should check your ID.
most of the time i think the police dont worry, until something bad goes on-its pretty common isnt it (being a 15 yr old -not saying any personal experiences!!! myself)
I believe, the age limits relating to drinkning in the UK are as follows:
* under 5 - may only be given alcohol on medical order
* 5 and over - may consume alcohol, e.g. at home. It is only illegal for those aged 5-18 to drink alcohol on licensed premises (without meeting other licensing requirements)
* under 14 - may not be present in the bar of licensed premises unless accompanied by a person over 28, it is before 9pm, and it is allowed by the premises
* 14 and over - may be in the bar of licensed premises during permitted hours at licensee's discretion
* under 16 - may be present in a restaraunt etc where alcohol is served with a meal and at the licensee's discretion may consume (but not purchase) alcohol bought by a parent or guardian
* 16 and over - may purchase beer, porter, cider, or perry with a meal in an eating area on licensed premises (In Scotland wine also)
* under 18 - may not purchase or be supplied with or consume alcohol in a bar
- police have powers to confiscate alcohol from under 18s drinking in public and to contact their parents
- Licensees and staff of licensed premises have a positive duty not to sell alcohol unless they are reasonably certain that the purchaser is not under the age of 18.
* 16-18 - May not be employed in bar of a licensed premises, unless as part of a Modern Apprenticeship Scheme
Essentially, then, I don't think you are breaking the law by drinking it at someones house. Buying it, supplying it, being a drunked chav and stealing from old ladies on the other hand might be a different matter...
