Different people prefer different wines. Often people who are new to wine will enjoy sweeter wines such as a Riesling or a Zinfandel.
I always recommend that newcomers to wine go wine tasting at wineries in your area. This lets you sample lots of wines and discover for yourself the wines you like best.

If you're getting into wine as a hobby, the best thing to do is to try different ones and find out your favorites on your own. That's all part of the fun!!!
I really like a sweet red wine called Camauro - Cagnina di Romagna, it's my absolute favorite. If you want white wine a lot of people really like Zinfandel.
Try Chateau D' Yquem....expensive but one of the best French wines.

The best wine out there is the one that you like the bouquet and taste. Go on line and find local wineries, they usually have free tours and wine tasting. If you like it than it is a good wine. Better wines will have the name of the winery, town, county or provence, and year on the label.
Go to a wine tasting. If you are in an area with wineries start there. If not find a local wine shop. Alot of them will have wine tastings where you can try a bunch of different wines and it won't cost you a fortune. Then once you find something you like the wine shop can help you pick some other things for you to try.
I'm very fond of the Yellow Tail line from Australia.
Yeah - try a few yourself and see what you like. .. white/red/rose.... full bodied/ medium bodied/ light... why not try a wine tasting night.Great fun and you will get a overall view of types of wines out there. In the end its all down to what you enjoy. My favorites are: Montepulciano and barolo, I like big reds. It is all a matter of individual taste. Have fun and cheers!!!
The best thing to do is experiment. I worked my way first into White Zinfindal's (pink) which are sweeter and moister, a little bit easier to adapt a taste for. I then started to drink Chardonnay, which is stil a white wine & chilled, but a little drier. I then moved onto reds and started to experiment with those. The whole process, for me, has taken a few years. It's all about adapting your tongue's palate and finding which wines work best for you and your food choices. Cakebread Chardonnay is tasty.
If you live in a large city there are probably wine stores or wine bars that offer tastings. That's a great way to start.
Or else you can just take a risk and buy random bottles like I do just to see what they're like.
