steal there keys?
if you meant driving home instead of drinking home.

give them a huge bottle of water and tell them that if they drink, you'll never speak to them again.works for my friends :).

A pre-agreement that someone in the group is a designated driver. That means that one person in the group does not drink that particular night. He/she is the driver for everyone else in the group and gets everyone home safe.

Otherwise, if this person has a habit of driving drunk, take the keys away as soon as you smell trouble. Drunk people are usually not too strong and they are uncoordinated. That is why they kill so many people on the roads when they are the ones behind the wheel. If you can't get the keys away, go outside and let the air out of the tires. That is pretty surefire.

I lost 3 classmates in high school in three separate accidents due to someone who thought it was cool to drive drunk. The most wonderful person of all was decapitated because his friend driving lost control while drunk. It was quite horrid and still remains with me many many years later.

I don't drink at bars. If I'm going to be drinking, its at either my house, or a friends house. (seriously, you get into a lot less trouble this way...) What I do, is have people surrender their keys when they show up. They give me their keys, I give them a drink. No keys = no drinks. When the parties over and we wake up the next day, they get their keys back. Hasn't been to much of a problem yet.

Let them stay the night, or force them too.
If anyone is planning to go home make sure they aren't drinking, or aren't drinking too much.
Try and send people home with sober drivers if they drink and insist on going home.
I've found my friends to be quite responsible and most people arrive via public transport or with their own pre-arranged sober driver, or they plan to stay the night.
Depending on the state of your friend you may need differnent options, if they are uncooperative stealing their keys may be the best preventative measure.

take keys and hide them BEFORE you begin drinking. this way you don't forget where you put the keys.

Take their car keys away from them or disconnect the battery in their car.

break their knees...

or, disable the car.

you choose.

remember- they would do the same for you.
