What's the best red dinner wine for a beginner?!

Question:

What's the best red dinner wine for a beginner?

Answers:
Some years ago a friend gave me a glass of red wine, I thought it was good and told her so. She then gave me the best advice I ever got about choosing a wine. She said that her rule for picking a wine was to never pay more than 6 dollars a bottle and find one with a pretty label. There are lots of good wines out there in all all price ranges. The guy at the liquor store can help, but in the end the best thing to do is to try a bunch of different wines and decide for yourself.

Shiraz is liked by most age groups and is a good wine to try.

Meridian makes a decent beginner wine. Try Meridian Merlot or Meridian Cab, only about 8-10 bucks a bottle.

two buck chuck from Trader Joes is fantastic. Very cheap, but is actually a very good bottle of wine for most palates, new or experienced-- Charles Shaw is the actual name of the wine-- it is nicknamed two buck chuck. Cheers

A syrah or petite syrah is a light red that goes well with salads and red meat and also with lighter fare and some white meats. Try it, I think you'll find it to generally be fruity and not as overpowering as a Cab.

A shiraz is fantastic. You can also get a shiraz/cabernet combination. The flavor is out of this world!

While they are good choices for beginners, syrah and petite syrah are certainly not light red wines! They are quite full bodied.

Try zinfandel as well - excellent red wines from California. Just avoid "white" zinfandel -- this is sweet, pink wine.

I like the cab/shiraz recommendation above - try Rosemont cab/shiraz blend from Australia. It's a very good wine for beginners.

Renwood 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel -
Zinfandel is one of the fruitest red wines.
The 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel is medium ruby in color. The bouquet consists of brown sugar, caramel, sage, eucalyptus, and bursting with dark berry fruit. The flavor is a sumptuous blend of warm blackberries on the entry, with a hint of dried fruit, finishing with sweet fleshy tannins.($19.49)
