More recently, 2001,2002, 2004 and 2005 California wines are getting high ratings.

This question is overly broad because each wine has its own good and bad years. Just like every person is different so is every year or every type and brand of wine produced. That is also why people spend so much time arguing over which year is a better year for such and such wine. There are even people who can tell what year a particular wine is by the way it tastes. If you don't have any experience with these things, don't worry about them. It won't affect your wine drinking experience.

Lookey here:

It varies by wine growing region, but basically if you find a prestigious wine in your corner package store, it will be from an average or poor year.

The best vintages of the best wines are the hardest to find unfortunately, and often sell out as "futures" before they are even in the bottle.
