Why do they put a concave dent in the bottom of my wine bottle?!

Question:

Why do they put a concave dent in the bottom of my wine bottle?

Is there a more logical reason than cheating me out of two more shots of wine? Just curious!

Answers:
The dent is known as a 'punt'.

There are many believable explanations why wine bottles have punts, and it is a question that often comes up when wine is being discussed.

However - there is no single reason that everyone agrees on. You do get wine bottles without punts and there is a famous Champagne bottle that doesn't have a punt. So it is not essential.

However, punts are traditional. Champagne bottles are stacked in the winery with the neck of one tucked in the punt of another. Bottles with punts stand better upright on uneven surfaces, punts can be used for holding when pouring, they channel sediment around the base, give strength to the bottle and makes it look larger.

Choose which answer you like, but I think the real answer nowadays is 'because it is traditional'

No one is cheating you, although sometime they use large punts to make a bottle look bigger and more impressive but the contents of the bottle are governed by law, and the contents are shown on the label or bottle. The standard wine bottle size contains 750ml with or without a punt.

Well, think about it-- if it had a CONVEX bottom, it wouldn't stand up worth a hoot, now, would it???

maybe it restricts too much wine for a person to avoid being drunk ?

The dent on the bottom of a wine bottle is called a punt. It is found on the bottom of Champagne/sparkling wine bottles and some still wine bottles. The main purpose of the rounded bottom or punt is to strengthen the bottle--especially important for sparkling wines--but punts also can be useful for collecting sediment and for pouring wine (it provides a place to put your thumb).

Great answer Sallana!

Some good answers here. Although I've seen the same thing in soup bowls in restaurants. Makes me think that they want you to think they're serving you more soup than they are.

Because if it was in the top that would be silly, now wouldn't it.
