New to the world of wine, want to learn more, help?

i'm getting a taste for wine and i'd like to learn more about how to choose a wine that i'm in the mood for from a given wine list. i know that different grapes will give a different variation, like pinot grigio will be a different taste to a colombarde or chardonnay but where can i learn what these differences are? for once i'd like to know what i'm ordering rather than relying on a recommendation. anyone know any good websites with good stuff to read? and please, no silly replies like 'trying drinking different ones, see which ones you like', i'm sure you can guess thats just a bit daft. like i said, just looking to read up on different types.
