Any Rioja...they are all nice, not too heavy, but weighty enough to taste nice and not wishy washy....can get a reasonable one at any Supermarket...but Sainsbury's have a good wine selection and some good deals as well although I don't think its got to buy one get one free stage yet.....

well the thing is that you just kind of pick an expensive bottle and hopes he likes it. ANd they kind of taste all alike too.

About $8 - $10 a bottle.

Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Shiraz
A delicious aroma of warm, spicy liquorice and brambly berry fruit is interwoven with savoury American oak. The palate is richly textured with well defined, ripe blackberry fruit flavours, soft generous tannins and a long, rich finish.

Anything Chilean or a malbec from Argentina.

A nice bottle of Claret won't be far off the mark.

My advice is to get him a nice bottle of Brunello di Montalcino

Chianti

Chateauneuf Du Pape , available at all bigger supermarkets , everything a good red wine should be.

just get the best you can afford

if in UK a starting price would be about £7 - £8

anything less than that will still be red wine, really nice ones are in the reigon of £12 - £15 upwards

I like Stags Leap Cab. It's a little more money than most but a good solid wine.

A nice chianti served with faver beans!

I could suggest personal favorites, but the problem is that my palate may not be the same as your fathers.

Also, is this to serve with a particular meal? Some red wines will go better with a particular cut of meat or cooking style.

Since you are likely to be going to a liquor store for this, I would suggest going to one where the staff is able to answer questions and make a suggestion for you. You should tell them whether your dad prefers a dry wine, sweeter wines, fruity flavors, etc. and if you are planning to serve it with BBQ steaks, oven roasted beef, or steak-au-poivre.

If he likes his meat rare, it may be better to get a Bordeaux. If he uses a lot of pepper on his meat, a Shiraz may be more suited.

If you get a person who knows the wines, rather than a clerk who sells screw-top wines to the guys on the street corner, he should be able to pair you up with one your dad will enjoy.

Depends whether you will be drinking it on the day ?
If so what will you be eating ?
Not knowing details above, perhaps its for his cellar?
This being case, Rothschild claret, cheapest Mouton Cadet.
Failing that a reasonably priced burgundy, Nuits St. George.
Either should impress & are reasonably priced.

Wolf Blass green label is very nice about £10 per bottle, but very mellow

chilean merlot

Yes ... thousands of them ... a nice Shiraz from Australia ($50-70) or a Cote du Rhone ($30-50) from France or even a Spanish Tempranillo ... would be nice this time of year.

But that probably isn't your sophistication or price range ...

So since it is for Fathers Day ... maybe you'd consider something like

FAT BASTARD

or

DA COACH ... Kick A** Red

or even

Ted the Mule

they are popular ... inexpensive ... and you could also enjoy a nice laugh as well.

cabernet sauvignons are nice, my fav. it's really not a big gamble if you live in Ca, just spend around ten or 12 dollars so you won't get a sour one. the label dosen't matter, it sounds like you're not conisseurs or anything

Chateau Neuf Du Pape or Mouton Cadet

Rosemount Shiraz and Dievole Chianti are really great and inexpensive red wines.

I will give you a choice of two.

Turner Road Reserve.2005 Merlot. and
El Coto Crianza 2003 Rioca.

Both are very reasonably priced

Hogue 2003 Genesis Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a spicy wine at its core with anise, clove and coffee bean accenting its bright fresh cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. It is a rich, full-bodied, expressive wine that still shows some finesse with fine, almost powdery tannins and well-integrated oak. Tobacco and black pepper linger on the finish. Pair this wine with grilled tri-tip steak, aged cheeses or dark chocolate. ($13.99)
