What are spirits, when referring to alcohol?!

Question:

What are spirits, when referring to alcohol?

Answers:

When you make alcohol such as whiskey, vodka, etc., you are distilling the "mash". By distilling, you are vaporizing the liquid in the mash, letting it rise and capturing these vapors. Then as they cool, they change states back into a liquid. This liquid is the acohol.
Anytime you do this to a liquid, the resulting liquid can be called the "spirits". It does not neccessarily apply to alcohol only but is rather more of a laboratory or chemist term.
