I have a bottle of Mavrodaphne. It is very sweet almost syrupy what can I mix with it to cut down on the sweetness?

Rather than toss it out - try pouring it over a bowl of ice cream or fresh summer fruit. Nice treat.
Mavrodaphne is supposed to be sweet, just as you describe.
You can't really make it less sweet. Diluting it with water just thins it.
Mavrodaphne never costs much -- I suggest you pour it away and buy something more to your taste.
