What month is best to collect sloes for sloe gin before the birds beat you to them?!

Question:

What month is best to collect sloes for sloe gin before the birds beat you to them?

Answers:

Thats the real trick when collecting your sloes. You want them ripe so it is usually best to wait for the first frost then on the other hand the birds are eyeing them up at about the same time. Mid October is when I normally collect mine then if I have ran out of sloe gin from last year I can make some intime for Xmas.(using the shake once a day for 7 days then 1 a week for 7 week method) It looks like a bumper crop this year in N Yorkshire (If I get them before the birds).
