Good red/wite wine to impress dinner guests... dont drink it myself prefer G@T?!

Question:

Good red/wite wine to impress dinner guests... dont drink it myself prefer G@T?

Answers:
depends on your budget (if you have one!)
for reds you can't beat a nice Chateauneuf-du-Pape but it is about £10 a bottle. If you want something almost as nice but about £7 try Wolf Blass yellow label.

For whites you can't go wrong with a Nottage Hill Chardonnay (about £5 a bottle) or a fresh Pinot Grigio.

Hope you have a good time.

Go for a rose. White Zinfandel is nice and is really popular at the moment.

Lindemans do a nice red Merlot .. and Shiraz...and its not overpriced. thats the one i buy...if i fancy a red wine...its nice.

barolo is a lovely red wine

I don't know if this is true but someone told me ages ago to look at the bottom of a wine bottle before you buy it. Most have an indentation and apparently, the deeper it is, the better quality of wine inside, as it costs more to produce this type of bottle. As I say, this could be complete nonsense, but I have noticed that the cheaper wines have very flat bottoms.
I have also got into the habit of wandering up and down the aisles in supermarkets when purchasing wine, and holding the bottle in my hand, stroking my chin and carefully contemplating the label as if I am an expert, when really, I'm inserting my finger into the bottom of the bottle to see how deep it is!!

It depends also what you are serving for dinner. For example, if it was beef meat then as someone else has said, Barolo (or my favourite,Amarone). However, if it is a lighter meat dish like veal or even pork, then a lighter red wine is better, a Fleurie or a nice burgundy wouldn't overpower. For the white, I wouldn't go past a New Zealand White, like a Nobilo or Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc. If you really want to impress on the red, the golfer David Frost has some lovely South African reds but they are not so easily available.

Chablis and mouton cadet

Depends what you will be eating & your budget?
But suggest either of following.
White: Chassagne Montrachet, Chablis premier cru, PouillyFuisse, Pouilly Fume, Sancerre.
Red; Italian; Barolo /Bardolino
French Burgundy; Gevrey Chambertin, Nuits St George .
Bordeaux, Mouton Cadet (Rothschild )
Spain; Marques de Riscal
