they drink alot

if they are unable to go a night without a drink..if they can't wait until a late time at night to drink....stressed out...

They're drunk a lot.

Also if they don't admit there is something wrong, and there is clearly a drinking issue. If they get drunk in the middle of the day, it's normally a good sign though.

well being sh-- faced every day would be one

Drinking alone. Drinking every day.

Withdrawals without having alcohol...i.e. the shakes, hallucinations, convulsions, etc.

They do stupid things when drunk and then drink again.

They think there is no other way to have fun or to settle down than to have a drink.

They can be mean, stupid, out of control, yet never seem to be able to not drink.

Can't seem to function without a drink and one drink is not enough (that is for starters)

I was told this in my nutrition class last semester - It's called like the "CAGE" test

Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?

Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking?

Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (Eye opener)?

Item responses on the CAGE are scored 0 or 1, with a higher score an indication of alcohol problems. A total score of 2 or greater is considered clinically significant.

ALSO, here are some personality traits you may observe an alcoholic having..

Low Frustration and Tolerance seems to be the most consistent trait. This is the inability to endure, for any length of time, any uncomfortable circumstances or feeling. The addict is impatient.

Anxiety that state which seems to exist in all people, exists in an exaggerated way in addicted persons. They are subject to nameless dreads and fears. This anxiety drives alcoholics and addicts to "fight or flight". Sometimes this is called free-floating anxiety.

Grandiosity is worn as a protective armour to hide feelings of low self-esteem. In reality, although addicts nourish an inflated image of themselves, their deep conviction is one of self-worthlessness.

Perfectionism sets impossible goals with inevitable failures and resultant guilt. The alcoholic/addict is an idealist. This idealism may be one of the reasons for success after recovery. They can be exceptionally fine workers once the illness has been arrested and after the perfectionism has been reduced to reasonable proportions.

Justification Addicts are masters at this. Justification is the science of arranging to do what we want to do, then making it appear reasonable.

Isolation and deep insecurity deprive the addict of the real generosity needed to make close and enduring friendships. They become loners.

Sensitivity exaggerates all the unpleasant interpersonal relationships experienced by the addicted person. This inevitably produces extreme resentment.

Impulsiveness "I want what I want when I want it." This is probably related to a low frustration tolerance. In some ways the addict takes pride in this impulsiveness, as though it were a valuable asset.

The alcoholic/addict can't seem to enjoy a job or task and long before completion is already moving on to something else.

Defiance is a common response to society as a whole, whether the addict is under the influence or not. This is associated with a feeling that one does not fit, exactly, into society.

Dependence on other persons exists in an exaggerated form in most alcoholics/addicts.

Hope that helps!

Gulp Gulp BUURP. all the time. If they drink to get drunk ever time they drink, not just a few here or there. Someone who drinks every night. Someone who is irritable until they have there first drink. Someone who gets drunk alone. Someone who goes to bars everynight. Someone who tells you there not an alcoholic, they can handle it.

When you find them comatose in a ditch is a pretty good sign.

Anyone who has to have a drink every day is an alchy.

Anyone who spends more on booze than FOOD is an alchy.

Anyone who can guzzle 12 beers and is still seemingly sober is an alchy.

If you can't stop drinking until you pass out, that's another sure sign too.

They bleed from thier ***. That means their Liver is failing

If alcohol competes for their energy.

Sure signs? Does drinking have a negative impact on that persons life in any way? That's a definite sign.

3 signs,
1 they need a drink
2 they need a drink, so they have one
3 both of the above
also, on a serious note, all ( or any) of the following when they havent got a drink: irritable, nervous, quiet, argumentative.....and the opposite when they have a drink.
hey, ya shitebags...wheres me drink..?

one of the biggest signs, is that the person has to wake up to a drink fo something... others are that they are always stocked up in the home fridge, but also goes out almost every night to get a beer at the bar, then go home to some more drinks!!! another is that if they say you have to have a drink to get rid of a hangover... Hmmmmm?....YEA, your an Alcoholic!!!

An alcoholic is often defined as a person who cannot go through a full day without consuming alcohol, or will experience width drawl symptoms without alcohol intake such as: irritability, loss of concentration, shaking, vomiting etc. Alcoholism will effect at least 2 of the 3 important areas of life (social, work and home.) I live with an alcoholic, my experience is that, this individual can go without drinking for most of the day, but when they get home from work, they immediately begin consuming alcohol "to unwind" (a term that a lot of alcoholics use) however, 1 drink will turn into 5 and they become nasty, start fights over nothing, become belligerent and hurtful with words, this individual has been violent at times and slurred speech, heavy breathing and "wild" eyes often ensue. Some alcoholics are aware of their problem, others are oblivious. It is most difficult to admit you have a problem, but it is the first step to sobriety.

I was told by a councilor that anyone who drinks on a regular basis is a alcoholic. I must be a weekend alcoholic. Three things to think about, does it affect your family, your job, or your health.

They can't go a single day without alcohol.

If the alcohol level in their blood stream is low, their bodies start to shake.

They wear sunglasses even indoors to hide their blood-shot eyes.

They can "tolerate" large quantities of alcohol in one sitting without becoming drunk like non alcoholics would.

They drink alone and hide how much they are drinking.

Things like that.

THEY ALWAYS HAVE A EXCUSE FOR EVERYTHING, THEY ARE LAZY, THEY PROCRASTINATE ALOT NOTHING EVER GETS DONE IT'S LIKE THEY HAVE LEAD IN THEIR A_ _ THEY HIDE THEIR LIQUOR AND LIE TO YOU SAYING THEY AREN'T DRINKING WHEN YOU CAN SMELL IT ON THEIR BREATH THEY MAKE 3-4 TRIPS TO THE LIQUOR STORE BUT THEY WILL TELL YOU THEY ARE GOING FOR A WALK IF THEY HAVE A CHANCE THEY WILL TAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR PURSE AND THEN WHEN YOU GO TO CHECK YOU MONEY'S NOT THERE YOU ASK THEM DID YOU TAKE MY MONEY NO MAYBE YOU SPENT IT??????????? WHEN YOU KNOW YOU DIDN'T ALWAYS SICK ON THE WEEKEND THEIR DEMEANOR CHANGES WHEN THEY DRINK THEY GET LOUD OR STUPID OR JUST PLAIN MEAN DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEIR LIFE UNLESS LIQUOR IS INVOLVED AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON...............................

The sure signs are the drinking, the hair of the dog, which means they have to have a drink in the morning because their feeling bad,e.g hangover, another is when drunk they blackout, and the next morning when you ask what did you do last night, they can't remember, drinking heavily after something stresses them out e.g family argument etc, lose all responsibility for self and others.Until drinking becomes their whole life. But get help before this happens, you'll also notice that their trying to hide things from you,be very supportive and never give up hope,i hope this is not happening to you but good luck for the future=]

They never pay attention! They get nastier that usual! Their grammar gets sloppy, They never listen to who they are talking too! They don't walk in a straight line! They look around alot to see if they can get a chance to drink!
They are almost always having a bottle or glass in their hand! They don't care about anything except their drink.. they'll do anything to get their daily doses of alcohol.. I know cause I useto be one! As long as I don't touch Alcoholic I'm cured. If I dare drink it then I'll be uncured.. so I now abstain from it! I didn't do it cold turkey.. I did it with MOD ... Moderation On Drink
Classes.. moderation wasn't good enough for me so I realized abstaining was absolutely necessary for me! I know it seems like I useto have more friends when I drank but they weren't real friends they just bum $'s to get their money for their drinking! Drinking alcohol is no better than a smoker. In other words chain smokers are just as bad as alcoholics! They do anything to get what they want! Even steal if necessary. I'm lucky I didn't have to stoop
to stealing to get my alcohol drink that I thought I needed it! My Head was telling me one thing while my heart was telling me the opposite!

I drink on average a case a day, I consider myself a drunk.... Alcoholics go to meetings.

A person who continues to drink in spite of negative results generally has a problem.

they go to AA meetings
