What makes an alcoholic?!

Question:

What makes an alcoholic?

Besides drinking alcohol all the time, is there a certain thought process that makes an alcoholic... well, an alcoholic?

Is frequent drinking what defines an alcoholic? What if a particular person has no access to alcohol, can that person still be classiffied as an alcoholic if that thought process questioned above is there?

Opinions, answers - anything would be great.

Answers: it does not matter how much, or how often you drink, it only matters, that you cannot stop completely, no matter how hard you try. i am an alcoholic (10 years sober now), who didn't drink all the time, no binge drinking, never got drunk, it never affected my work, relationships, money, etc; i just could not stop having my occasional 2 drinks. alcoholism is classified as a disease by the medical community, it is a sickness of the mind, body, and spirit.the craving is mental, as well as physical. what helped my was attending AA meetings, finding a sponsor, and working the steps.a spiritual awakening & change of lifestyle is key to success. Just because you think about drinking doe's not mean you have a drinking problem, but I do think that some people have an addictive personality, and can contribute to meany problems in their life -one being an alcoholic.
Unfortunately I have known too meany people with this problem. Dear Lismarie there is a school of thoughtwhere some Doctors and scrinks believe Alcholisim can be Inherridary it passes down throuugh the Genes, there was a time in my life when I drank on the Canal Bank by the river for 4 years am I an alco I dont know even think about drink now, I rarely go for a drink now but there was one thing I learnt when I was drinking nearly all the guys came from Broken Marriges or had been Dumped by their girl Friends I listened to storey after Storey all the same. It could be Depression or something which happened in Childhood maby Abuse and the only Escape from these memories is in a Bottle I pity anyone in this boat and you have to be there to really understand the problem its not to be laughed at its all of the above take it from one who has been there, the thought process u refere to is called Psycholic Dependentency where the person may not have access to alcoholl but is still Craveing it like a drug addict craves their next fix its a part of life that some overcome and some cant its sad............
