First is that very few wines actually taste much like grapes - an exception is wines made from Muscat which do smell and taste very grapey.
Second is that if you want to describe the taste of a wine then it doesn't give much of an indication of what it tastes like to say 'it tastes like wine' or 'it tastes like grapes'.
One of the pleasures of wine is the many flavors you find in the glass and to talk about and share descriptions of the taste.
Lets say someone asks what Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon taste like. An answer 'they taste like wine' is not going to help them decide which they'll prefer, but if you say the first tastes like asparagus and green pepper while the second tastes like cassis then it gives an indication of the flavor profiles.
I have been to tastings where we have had a bunch of matching wine grapes alongside wines made from the same variety, and when you eat (for example) a Gewurtztraminer grape and taste a Gewurtztraminer wine then you can notice a similarity. But if you ask me what Gewurtztraminer tastes like and I reply 'a bit like Gewurtztraminer grapes' then you'll not find that reply helpful and indeed it sounds a bit rude.
And if the wine has had some oak aging or undergone malolactic fermentation then additional - non grape - flavors will be present. Source(s):

Why would you say that?? wine can have many flavors and the grape is in it.... because even though it's made of grapes, it doesn't taste like grapes. The grape is a given and all wines are infused with something else whether it's from the wood in the barrels or an additional fruit. The art of wine tasting is picking out what that infusion is.
However, Publix brand white grape juice aftertaste is just like a glass of zinfandel. CYes they do! Merlot , Cabernet, Zinfandel, Chardonnay....all different kinds of grapes!!!! You're wrong about nobody saying it tastes like grapes.
They say a wine is 'fruity' and they say it all the time. That means like it tastes like grapes!
. its because grapes have a majestic flavor that is easily disguised. Alcohol kills that flavor and is why you dont taste it. hmmmm.... very intresting. But then cheese doesn't taste like milk either. : ) Well in a way it does, but also there are other flavors as well. But if there was an apple wine? apricot wine? I wouldn't taste grapes in those kinda wine, i would taste a crisp apple taste. If it was a concord, it does taste a bit of grape, green grape wine i taste grapes. So it just also depends on what wine everyone drinks. The grapes used to make wine are completely different than table grapes that you eat. The grape flavor that you detect in table grapes gets beaten silly when you ferment wine grapes. I have an idea that you already know all this. I am not positive I understand where you are going with this. Very Good Question. People that haven't acquired the taste of Alcohol cannot appreciate the taste of fomented Grapes. So they say a bunch of weird crap like "mmm tastes like honey due melon with a hint of Sweet Spanish Onion and perhaps some Margarita mix"..give me a freakin Break
WINE TASTES LIKE WINE. It is an acquired taste just like coffee, beer or scotch. It really tastes like shat but once you get used to it, it taste's better. and once you reach alcoholism (and I HAVE) it starts to taste absolutely fukkin delicious......mmmm
Anywhoo... yuppy's are drinking wine so they make it sound sophisticated and pleasing to the palate. I've seen people cringe after tasting some petite syrah then try to say some bullshat about the "notable tannins, full bodied textures, manicured legs and" WTF are you talking about woman! GET ON!! I SAID GET THE HELL ON!!!
so sowwy for my rant The reason we don't say wine tastes like grapes is that wine grapes are seldom eaten at the table. If you taste wines such as concord, scuppernong or muscadine grape wine (all grapes that are regularly eaten out of hand) then you would say that the wine tastes like grapes. You have to drink the right wine.Try Niagara grape wine.It actually tastes a lot like Welch's white grape juice.
