What is the difference between the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio labeled Alto Adige vs. Valdadige?!

What is the difference between the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio labeled Alto Adige vs. Valdadige?


Both are from the same winery. As far as I can tell they are only different by the label...can anyone help?!?


Answers: The primary difference is the wine marked Alto Adige is made from grapes grown in the geographical area designated as the Alto Adige DOC and the one labelled Valdadige is made from grapes grown in the geographical area designated as the Valdadige DOC.

DOC stands for 'Denominazione di Origine Controllata' which is a legally defined geographical region similar to the French 'Appellation Controlee' system.

In theory one would expect the wines to taste differently as a result of terroir - the effect of the area the grapes are grown in - but a lot depends on what happens in the winery. :)

The winemakers give each wine exactly the same tasting note :- "This dry white wine is pale straw-yellow in color. The clean, intense aroma and dry flavour with pleasant golden apple aftertaste make Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of great character and versatility" (see http://www.santamargherita.com/prodotti_... and http://www.santamargherita.com/prodotti_... so it appears the winery expect them to taste the same.

see my profile the santa margherita pinot grigio valdadige (valdige is the appellation). is the most popular pinot grigio in the us. the founder' reserve "impronta del fondatore" is a limited release, with the finest pinot grigio grapes from alto aldige D.O.(alto aldige appellation). both wines come from the trentino-alto adige. "val d'adige" means valley of adige.
