DO NOT BUY A MISTER BEER KIT!!
They make lousy beer. This is why very few homebrew supply stores carry them.
Pick up a copy of 'The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing,' by Charlie Parpazian. Then visit: http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/list... to learn where the homebrew clubs meet in your area. Go to a meeting or two and ask questions. Homebrewers love to talk. Ask where they buy their supplies.

If you haven't done it before, go to a place that sells home brew supplies and you can buy a kit which includes the directions and the things you need to make it, such as supplies and ingredients.
Buy a home brew kit from a local homebrewing supply store. This kit will include all of the ingredients you'll need, and all you'll have to do is get a few pieces of equipment like a brew kettle to cook the wort, a couple of glass carboys to do the fermentation (at least primary), a hydrometer, and a few other gadgets. The kits almost all come with easy to follow instructions too. This is your best place to start.
This is called "extract" brewing, because you're using a pre-made malt extract instead of crushing your own grain ... much easier.

Home brew shops have the starter equipment kits for about $50-70 dollars. If there are none close, many of them ship via eBay or their own websites. These stores will also have ingredients and instructions sold in pre-measured kits for starters. You just select the type of beer you want to make, get that kit, and you are good to go.
I would also highly suggest buying "The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing" by Charlie Papazian. It's fun & easy to read and will tell you everything you need to get started brewing your own. You'll enjoy the process a bit more after reading the book because you'll know the "whys" and what is going on at different points in the process.

Your choice, but I disagree with the post below. Starting right away with a 5 gallon kit, and all the added costs is expensive. After brewing for 9 years, costs have gone up on equipment. Mr. Beer is fairly cheap, and if you're comfortable with doing their kits, its easy to move on. Many home brewers have started this way. My opinion, and exprience. If you want to start with a full blown kit, plan on sanitizer, kettle, and at least 2 cases of bottles to start. You're at 150 by then. And you haven't brewed anything yet.
If you're commited, plan on another 150 for ingredients and miscellaneous supplies, to make the process easier.
I highly recommend starting with Mr. Beer. Go to the weblink. If you don't want to buy online, they list the retailers that sell their kits. What I liked was doing small batches, trying many different styles, and finding what I like. With the 5 gallon kits, you better like what you're making, since you're going to have around 2 cases of the brew!
It is a good way to start, and will get you going on what should be a very rewarding hobby.
Also, join some forums, on Yahoo, I'm on the Mr. Beer group and a very active homebrew group. Just reading the posts you will learn alot!
