for a retail chain that is supposed to be low on prices, WHY ARE THE CIGARETTES (BUT NOT THE ALCOHOL) MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MOST STORES GAS STATIONS, EVEN AS MUCH AS MOST TAVERNS?

DEBBIE: I know some areas are taxed different, but this walmart was RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET and the only place in the city that was $1.50 HIGHER than a convience store across street.
second if they had prices like everyone else, THEY WOULD SELL MORE.
also, convience stores (like you said are more expensive for food) but are actually some ones are CHEAPER for cigarettes. It is like on an opposite curve or something) But yeah a $1.50 more across the street WOW??

I get newports (usually in wisconsin they are about 3.11on their normal "sale" they have (10 months out of the year).
I went to walmart (not seeing prices for first time) and asked for 2 packs of cigs. She says "9.35 please.
It still didn't register in my head yet. I thought she thought i maybe said 3 packs, which sounds reasonable. So i replied back.... "no just need two not three"
clerk looked at me smiled and said "that IS for two".. I almost fell over, and smile and said "low prices ALWAYS, my a**!
She even said it is rediculious.
They sell less of them so they need to make the profit. They are in the business for that.Also taxes on cigs are more in some areas. Other thing convienence.If you go into a 7/11 or white hen everything is higher because they are convienent.

For a retail chain that is supposed to be low on prices, WAL-MART CHARGES A LOT FOR CIGARETTES BECAUSE THEY WOULD OTHERWISE BE ACCUSED OF PUSHING A NARCOTIC TO GET PEOPLE HOOKED.
I know what you mean. I think it's because of two reasons,
1st I don't think they sell the quantity that a gas station sells. I mean I'll stop by the gas station for smokes but I'm not going to waste my time parking, walking into wal mart, standing in line, to buy a pack.
2nd there is that idea that Wal Mart's prices are lower, so people just assume they mean on everything. You know "Always the lowest price, ALWAYS"
There are 2 possibilities:
1. Probably more expansive because of all the shoplifting that goes on in WalMart. Try and pull that stunt at a gas station or convience stores were cameras and convex mirrors are everywhere.
2. WalMart is doing it part by helping you to quit your smoking addiction. If you are stupid enough to pay the higher prices at there stores, then they made money off of you before your eventual death from tobacco. But if you don't buy any, then they've done their part for cleaner air and saving your life.
taxes and the fact that they cost more
they don't sell as many and they are losing profit from all the convenient stores.
