Grape variety for a South African red wine?!

Question:

Grape variety for a South African red wine?

I was enjoying a bottle of Two Oceans Pinotage from South Africa the other night. I tried to get the grape varieties that form the Pinotage but could not locate it.

Is this related to the Pinot Noir grape or is it a blend of something completely different?

Thanks.

Pinotage is a hybrid grape variety, a cross between pinot noir and cinsaut.

It can be used to make a rose style wine, a lighter style red similar to Beaujolais, or a more robust, deeper red.

In other words, its style can try to mimic the lighter part of its heritage (pinot noir) or its more robust Rhone half, cinsaut.

Cheers!

It is a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Now that South African Pinotages have become chic to drink in many countries the grape has been planted elsewhere and we should see Australian pinotages, California pinotages, Chilean pinotages, etc., etc. on shelves within a few years.
