Transporting alcohol illegal?!

Question: I'm home brewing some mead and want to know if it is illegal to transport this to another state, on a visit to a friend, as a gift?

Well depends on the state. But generally you must have a permit to transport liquor (other than purchased from a retail store) period! Especially across state lines.

Also, remember (depending on your state) home brew is for your personal consumption only. It may be illegal to give it as a gift.
If it's sealed -- and you don't get pulled over -- probably not.
It's most likely illegal. But if you keep it in the trunk, hidden, and don't speed or do anything reckless and get pulled over, nobody will ever know. Just keep your nose clean while driving it across the state line. Also make sure you don't have any outstanding fines or warrants, then they have probable cause to search.
I don't think giving homebrews as a gift is illegal. If you don't charge for it, it should be fine. This is probably a side note, though, as you would give such a gift in the recipient's home, likely devoid of all law enforcement.
