Alcohol and Youth Facts

Alcohol is a leading cause of death among youth, particularly teenagers. It contributes substantially to adolescent motor vehicle crashes, other traumatic injuries, suicide, date rape, and family and school problems.1
Every day, on average, 11,318 American youth (12 to 20 years of age) try alcohol for the first time, compared with 6,488 for marijuana; 2,786 for cocaine; and 386 for heroin.2
Alcohol is by far the most used and abused drug among America’s teenagers. According to a national survey, nearly one third (31.5%) of all high school students reported hazardous drinking (5+ drinks in one setting) during the 30 days preceding the survey.3
Children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance use, and delinquent behavior in both middle school and high school. By young adulthood, early alcohol use was associated with employment problems, other substance abuse, and criminal and other violent behavior.4
Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin drinking at 21.5
More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year―about 4.65 a day―as a result of alcohol-related injuries

'Misuse' implies that they are using it, but for the wrong purpose. I am pretty sure that kids are using it for the correct purpose (getting drunk). They just happen to be abusing it.

Search for items describing 'teen alcohol abuse' and you'll get better results.

Teaching responsibility and respect is far more important.
The making teens aware that abuse will destroy their future.
I had wine at all family celebrations at 10 as I remember.
and the Egg Nog was often spiked with ever-clear.
It sound to me Like your a prohibitionist or religious zealot.

As a note. I have a Friend with a son that is 16. It is not uncommon for his son to report that some other kid showed up somewhere with a 1.75L of some hard liquor and everyone does shots and gets out of hand. It has not been that long since I was that age. Getting beer was relatively easy then and that is what everyone had. Beer. We drank a few beers and often got drunk and were way too not cautious to say the least.

But we concluded that today it is so difficult to get alcohol as a teenager (too risky for an adult to get caught contributing) that they drink harder liquor faster to get drunk rather than (dare I say) "learn" responsibility and responsible drinking. Frankly it is scary.

Teenagers only relate with other teenagers when it comes to reaching the place you need to be. I was a very troubled, heavy drinking teen who has since given up alcohol and wrote about my experiences. The following site is where my writings are for free to view, and my experiences are an ongoing growth, with alot more of the book to come. Please make this available to them, the only way to change their lifes is for them to change it THEMSELVES.
