Is it fun being a barback?!

Question:

Is it fun being a barback?

how do u get a job as a bar back, what kind of places use them? hotels?

Answers:
No, it's miserable being a barback. But it's a good path to becoming a bartender, which is the most fun job I've ever had. Once you're a barback start asking for day-time or off-night shifts. Ask question of the bartenders to learn. Etc. Should be able to move up pretty quickly.

Any place with a reasonably busy bar uses barbacks. I'd say just walk in during the day when it's slow or just opening and ask for the manager. Tell him/her that you want to be a barback. They'll either send you on your way or hand you an application. Done and done.

What is a bar back? We have Bar Tenders in the U S, is this what you are referring to?

If so then you apply for the job but here we have a bar tenders school so you can learn the different drinks how to make and how to serve them. Also learn the language of the trade.

It is a good job in the right place and you can earn quite a bit in tips. Restaurants with a lounge are the biggest users, there are a few Hotels with bars. Look in the classified ads of the local newspaper under help wanted would be a good place to begin.

A bar-back is someone who does the dirty work behind the bar for the bartenders. e.x.: wash glasses, fill beer coolers and get ice.

Places that have bar-backs are usually high volume bars or nightclubs. It can be a fun job if you can keep up with the pace. You'll learn what it's like to be behind a bar and maybe have the chance to move up to actually bar tending, where the real money is.

P.S. - You have to be 18yrs old in the U.S. to do this!

Busy bar's not a great job, Filling up ice stocking beer throwing out garbage, Don't do it.

Most of the above is correct. I'm going to have to call nix on the bartending school. I've been bartending for 9 years and have yet to see one of these people make it. Sure, in a controlled setting making drinks is easy. I would love it if that's all I do. But I'm juggling tabs, split checks, running credit cards, scanning the crowd, observing the customers for overindulgence, calling cabs, checking i.d.'s, restocking my liquor, changing kegs,, getting ice, all while trying to get that blonde's phone number at the end of the bar.

Bartending is fun, if your good you make a lot of money. That's why everybody aren't bartenders.
