The reason James Bond orders a martini "shaken not stirred" is to set him apart from the rest of the world. When Ian Fleming created James Bond in 1952, gin martinis were very popular. It was common practice to stir the gin rather than shaking it so as not to "bruise" (water down due to melting ice) the gin. When James Bond walked into a bar (or wherever) and ordered a vodka martini "shaken not stirred," it was to signify to everyone in the room that he was something special...not just your average man.
It's a possibility I don't really think there is any real story behind it. Personally I think he says it to look sophisticated.
mostly cause it sort of rymes.............
Tthe reason you stir it it to keep the ice from melting. In all actuallity he is ordering a watered down martini.
Hmm...
Actually, there's a bit of a story to this.

The martini is a vodka martini, not a gin martini. Gin 'bruises' when shaken (meaning that it bubbles up and loses flavor), while vodka does not.

It was shaken because it infuses the vermouth and vodka better than if stirred. Besides, only girly drinks have a swizzle stick or straw...
