Why do liquor stores have red dots on them? What do they represent?!

Question:

Why do liquor stores have red dots on them? What do they represent?

At least in South Carolina a lot of the liquor stores have red dots on them. Why is this? What do they mean? What are their history?

Answers:
south carolina law prohibits advertising by liquor stores, so it's a way to do it covertly.

I'm from SC too, and I have wondered this myself.... Pay attention to this and tell me if it's true...is it just ABC liquor stores that have the red dots? I'm thinking it's just the ABC sign. Ever since I noticed the red dots I started paying attention every time I see them now, and so far when I look at the name, sure enough it's ABC Liquor.
