What is the difference between Straw and Hay?!
Straw is the stalks of cereals like barley and wheats.
Both are cut and dried before bailing.
Hay can be cropped and bailed twice a year with the right conditions if there is no animal grazing at all. If you have soem animal grazing and remove them in May you will just get one hay cut in Aug/Sept. If the grass is lush and dense yuo can get more than 100 small bales per acre.
Straw is bailed as a by-product once the cereals are harvested. You are left with stubble which is either left over winter or turned into the ground as organic matter.
It's essential to sit atop the last hay stack at the end of bailing and review your work with a bottle of cold cider...well it is on my farm anyway !
hay is used as feed, straw as bedding or organic crop blankets.
Both have some nutritianal value for animals, hay is preferred.
Bailing grass slightly damp gives you haylaige. This allows for slight fermentation of the grass so it has more nutritious - but it goes mouldy so the shelf life is not as long.
I end up with tons on the stuff on our arable farm. If you want some, just ask.
Not all farmers are as angry or insulting as Buck

Straw is the stem base from wheat and is used as bedding for livestock. (not edible). Hay can be alfalfa or clover baled for livestock to eat...
"lewis" is correct.... Hay is generally an Alfalfa for livestock food.
Straw is simply the stems left from harvesting any grain field that has a head such as wheat, oats, barley. Straw is used for the floor of the barn which then makes it easy to clean the area since the waste from the animal is on the straw instead of stuck to the cement floor.
: ) Happy farming !!

Straw is not edible.
obviously all of you live in the city and have no idea what you are talking about. Hay and straw are both edible for livestock. They are a good source of CP (crude protein) for instance, hay will spoil and straw will last longer for cattle or whatever, when you feed outside in the winter. you can ammoniate your straw for more nutrition. you need to ration your feed intake (you can use the Pearson square ration formula) with different kinds of forages and grains, in combination with minerals, etc.. I could go on forever, but you would not understand. If you dont know the answer to a question.....dont answer it
