I wouldn't bother with top shelf in a Long Island Iced Tea. Mixed properly, you don't taste the alcohol much anyway. Save the top shelf for drinking neat or on the rocks.

I would agree to save the expensive stuff for the drinks you can taste them better in, but I would say Patron taquila, Cointreau, Absolut Vodka, Bombay Saphire gin and Bacardi light rum.

David H's recipe is right on spot.

Avoid all recipes that tell you both tequila and gin are in a Long Island Ice Tea. They are NOT compatible and make a sour, off-flavored drink that will taste bad regardless of the quality of the other ingredients.

Want tequila, make yourself a Texas Tea and SUBSTITUTE the tequila for the gin.
