Have you ever had Absinthe?!

Question:

Have you ever had Absinthe?

I heard that it makes you hallucinate or feel really really high or something--probably why it is illegal in the United States...
I want to know how you felt if you had drank it.... My friends are trying to get me to try it...

Answers:
According to Wikipeda, there is "no evidence shows it to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than ordinary alcohol". Is that true? I don't know. I went to The Czech Republic and they were selling it all over the place... It supposedly tastes like anisette. Try it. I am sure a little won't kill you... Just don't over do it.

don,t be stupid it could kill you! evidently your friends are dumbass,s don,t join them, do you want Brain damage?

back in the day, they used to put opium in it so you would get high. however, that is no longer done even though absinthe is still not sold in the united states (that i know if). ive had some that i brought back from europe. when you buy it now, its just regular alcohol and nothing special. in fact, its pretty disgusting. tastes like nyquil/black licorice.

they dont have it here the kind u buy here is just alchol tastes like sh*t and you have to go to germany for the real stuff i had a friend put 4 hits of lsd in a 5th and 10 people drank it and it was not cool they tried to get me to do it but i was like naw

If it's real absinthe, then the hallucinogenic properties are just myth and urban legend. Those stories were created in the early 1900s by the French wine growers because absinthe was more popular and the vineyards couldn't compete because their vines had been nearly wiped out by a blight years before.
Anyway, if there's an absinthe that claims psychotropic properties or claims very large amounts of thujone (the compound *claimed* to be the hallucinogen) then stay away from it because the real stuff has very low levels of thujone and does not make you hallucinate or get high or any of that.

The primary herbs that give absinthe its flavor are wormwood (the source of the thujone) which gives an herbal, almost grassy note. Then there's fennel which gives a sort of spiciness and subtle liquorice-y taste (it's the primary spice in italian sausage) and anise which gives absinthe it's black liquorice flavor that dominates. If you don't like liquorice, you won't enjoy the flavor of absinthe. There are a bunch more herbs in there for color and more complex flavors, but far less noticeable.
Keep in mind that the color is going to be a forest green to olive green, sometimes even closer to a light brown (the colors come from the herbs and are natural and subject to the effects of time). If what they're trying to serve you is a bright, almost unnaturally vivid green, it's going to be crappy imitation stuf which I'd personally avoid at all costs.

Come on now...people need to stop hyping it up. Is it a good drink, yes. Will you completely trip out if you drink some...NO. Only large amounts consumed on a regular basis will eventually lead to some mental issues. For the occasional drinker you will only get a buzz and slightly loopy...the rest is mental.

Do some research and try some...it won't kill you.

i just did, had about a glass the other night. it took about 20 min, and i started feeling really warm and sort of numb. my boyfriend had some with me and ended up barfing and blacking out, he mixed it with bacardi, though. to me, it just seemed like an alcoholic buzz, nothing out of the ordinary, however the next morning, i just couldnt bring myself to wake up. i d try to wake up and feel like i just had to sleep more, even though i had a full nights sleep. also, i had a nauseous feeling that stayed with me pretty much the whole day, except when i ate, which would tide me over for a little while, then back to nauseous again. that was something i usually dont feel when i drink regular liquor unless i drink excessively. also, the taste is pretty nasty...it reminded me of licorice also.

I had absinthe when I was in Madrid studying abroad. The reason why it is illegal in the states is partly because it is made with 'wormwood' which is a hallucinogen. It is what Van Gough was drinking when he cut his ear off. Back in the day it was made with the same care as those who make moonshine so the alcohol content wasn't specific; now their are stricter regulations even abroad. I actually took only one shot w/o any flaming sugar or foo foo stuff like that. I am a seasoned drinker and I felt tipsy soon their after. I didn't feel like I needed to drink the rest of the night and I had a 'giddy' time if you know what I am saying. I think if you don't go overboard with the unknown you will be o.k. You can always say you did it and one shot will definitely not kill you. Beware...it does taste like the nastiest licorice I have ever had (probably why people do the flaming sugar trick) but after I got it past my throat everything was fine. Good Luck to you!
