What are some good rum to try?!

Question:

What are some good rum to try?

What is the different between dark, white rum and other types of rum? Also, what are some good rum to try that is smooth tasting? Cost doesn't matter either.

Answers:
Kelly, rum is made from fermented sugar cane and sometimes just fermented sugar. The darkness comes from sugar that is less refined -same thing as making bread from highly milled white flour as opposed to whole grain; there's more "stuff" in it. But it also comes from additives, such as molasses, which are dark (molasses itseff is a sugar product). Various spices, such as nutmeg or cardamon many be added, and exotic juice extracts -all of this top secret stuff, of course -sort of like the formula for Coke.

The phrase, "good rum" is sort of a contradiction in terms, because rum, as well as all otgher "white" liquor is whipped up on the spot as needed -aging (over years and years) is not part of the process. Translation: we're talking "cheap booze" here, by definition. And so, the prices charged reflect a lot of marketing and mystique -has little to do with the actual cost of production.

That said, storage in wooden casks (as was done at sea years ago, and still IS if you take a "Barefoot Cruise") may be employed; the old rum, soaked into the wood, gives a special kick to the stuff.

I suggest you buy miniatures of various kinds and sample them until you find what you like the best. Forget brand and cost; if you like it, you like it.

To your good health!

White Rum

Bacardi Black, rich taste
Bacardi 1873, dark rum

i looove captain morgan's spiced rum, it's kind of vanilla-y.

if you like coconut, you'd really like malibu rum.

the flavor of the black rum it's dryer plus the texture it's thicker so according to this u should mix black rum like bacardi solera 1983 with coke for example and white rum like white bacardi or matusalen with sprite
cuban rums are famous because of tradition

Malibu & pineapple juice is my fav.I use one jigger of rum to a can of Dole pineapple juice over ice.Think I'll have one right now.Enjoy safely.

Captain Morgan Tattoo rum is real good. Makes a good rum and coke. I hate rum in general, but I like this one because it's more flavorful and less harsh than a lot. I think it's about two bucks more than Captain's gold, so it's really not too bad at all.

go for bacardi white rum its best

everyone has chimed in pretty well, but they must have forgotten the best which is mount gay. It's grey goose of rum. It's high end, smooth and a white rum. if you want a dark thats smooth is capt morgan's private reserve.

Malibu coconut rum is my fav great on a hot day mix with coke and ice in a tall glass this is so Yummy. mmmmmmmmmmmm Im getting thirsty now

I've tried all, but Captain Morgan and Mulibu are my favorites. Somthing about the flavor.. Smooth and tasty.

Light rums are generally used for mixing, Dark rum has more flavor but people don't usually use it because it discolors alot of mixed drinks, Bottom line If your making mixed drinks go with Bacardi light and if your going to drink rum straight go with Appleton Jamaican rum.

151

Bundeberg Rum....Yummmm!

rum 151

Appleton V/x (light rum) or Daniel Finzi spiced rum
Wray & Nephew overproof (white rum)
Appleton Genesis (same as Appleton v/x but the color has been removed so it looks like white rum)

All these are from Jamaica

Most people will "Bacardi" or "Captain Morgan" because they've heard of it...everybody has. Of the easier to find rums that are not one of the above, the suggestion of Mount Gay is a great one.

If you want a nice sipping rum (for the sake of tasting the rum, not for mixing) you want a dark, aged rum.

Pyrat XO is a really good one to start off with.

Ron Anejo Anniversario is another really nice sipping rum.

...and here's everything you never knew you could know about rum:

I am going to agree with the above poster. Pyrat XO is very good. I am more of a tequila guy, but I sipped some of this and it was very smooth and had a nice flavor.

Pompano Aniversario----Venezuelan rum.....yumm.

capt morgan..
