How long do you usually start as a barback before becoming a bartender?!
Answers: i was also wondering if its worth going to bartending school first before becoming a bartender, or if its less time/money consuming if you just apply to become a bartender? please let me know...
I never worked as a bar back or took a class before becoming a bartender. Most important is to be good with people and stay alert. No one wants to wait a long time for a drink. Drink recipes are easy to learn. If someone asks for a rum and coke can you figure it out? A class would be useful if you want to work in a fancy restaurant so you would know which glass and garnish to use, otherwise you can learn on the job. If you can't find a bartending job I would recommend working as a waiter to get your foot in the door. You will learn a lot by being there.
bartending school is a waste of time & money. check out www.totallyfreebartending.com. attending school is not going to help you getting hired, it is a deterrent. apply at a small bar/restaurant as a barback, and work your way up. how long it takes depends on your work ethic, and your willingness to learn. good luck !
I never bar backed. Bartending Is a breeze. You can pull off anything if you have the personality and the right attitude. Learning the drinks will come.
