How can I tell if my yeast is too old before I use it?!

Question: To proof the yeast, you want to put one packet of the yeast (or if using the kind in a jar 2 1/2 teaspoons) into 1/2 cup of warm water. The water should be between 110 and 115 degrees. Stir to dissolve the yeast and then add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Wait 5 minutes and then if the liquid is foamy and smells like bread the yeast is active.

Put it in a bowl, add the water (or milk, or other liquid) that's in your recipe, along with a little sugar. If it foams up, it's active and you can go ahead and use it.

Look at the expiration date or proof it.
