Question: OK..The aussie BBQ? Had a debate about BYOs, alcohol and meat. What is the protocol for this..example, you take snags..is that for you to eat..or everyone. or you eat marinated steak that someone else has bought....same as for beer, u bring a six pack of xxxx, and drink someone elses VB. I mean it has never worried me...alot of ppl especially mothers, say they take lots of meat, cos they know that there will be alot of kids there, and kids dont really care wat they eat, as long as they are fed. I understand this part...your thoughts

If I bring snags, I don't pinch the other bloke's eye fillet before he know's it's ready, cos then he ends up with my measly old snags.
I don't mind sharing beer because ... well let's face it... one beer is just like the other..... (Is that howling I hear?)

If someone turns up with just a couple of sausages and a 6-pack, and then they eat the rib fillet, scoff the Bourbon and polish off the last of the red wine, I get a bit peaved.

Mums always take a lot of meat because they know the BBQ cheapskates get in before the kids do and take more than they brought and pick all the best bits first!

Ya godda luv us Aussies!

R u kiwi or Aussie?

Generally, i think that if you bring your own alcohol and meat, you eat that, that's just the normal etiquette of an aussie barbie. There is always LOTS of food and alcohol, and generally, i don't think people would really mind if you shared what others have brought along. Just don't go empty handed.

It depends on the company - if it's with people you know well like family or close friends then anything goes and you probably wouldn't be shy to ask. Generally food you bring to a BBQ is for sharing BUT you don't bring cheap stuff (supermarket snags) and then expect to hook into other people's cutlets, steaks etc.
Ditto with beer and any other grog for that matter. Don't bring VB and then drink the Boag's or Cascade that someone else brought.

With our friends if we take meat it usually all goes into make a kind of "Potluck Dinner" so that should be remembered when organising what you are taking - don't take what you wouldn't eat. As far as alcohol mostly it is byo and you should never take someone else's drinks without asking.
