Alcohol proofs?!

Question: im a casual drinker and i was wondering how the proof of the spirit effects the amount that it takes to get you drunk. i realize certain people have certain tolerances for certain alcoholic beverages, but in theory, for example would 1 shot of everclear which is 190 proof= just under 5 shots of captain morgans rum(42 proof).

The proof is always two times the alcohol content, ie.. 80 proof is 40% alcohol. The common theory is that one 1 1/2 ounce shot of 80 proof liquor, one 12 ounce beer, or one 8 ounce glass of wine all contain close th the same amount of alcohol keeping in mind that the alcohol contents can vary in different beers and wines. Hope this was helpful.

Roughly, yes. Basically the proof denotes the concentration of alcohol in the drink, so drinking higher-proof alcohol puts more alcohol into your system more quickly. That's why people who don't drink often, who have a low tolerance, or who don't want to get drunk will sometimes choose a drink with low-proof alcohol such as an amaretto sour.

Captain Morgan's original spiced rum is 100 proof = 50% alcohol
Everclear is 190 proof = 80% alcohol

Divide the proof by half and you get the concentration of the alcoholic content.
