Underage Drinking? Why so popular?!
Underage Drinking? Why so popular?
I don't know but it seems like so so so many teens are drinking underage and my sister (turns 18 june 10th) has said she doesn't drink... but how much can you belive? I know I may seem like the loser little brother, but I don't see what's cool about breaking the law? They say whats the big deal if its just like a drink... but I still don't feel right.. after my parents had a few glasses of wine, my sister was talking about how she had a peach bacardi breeze and it was really good, and my parents didn't seem to mind.. one drink now and then may not seem like a big deal but it still kind of makes me mad in a way, I don't know, just a little confuzed. I had a shot once in cozemel my family was there and I would never think about drinking here, maby a sip to see the taste, but after that shot which probably didn't contain much alcohol, I started feeling guilty. I just don't know what to think and people say they dont do something, but then they think its not a biiiiiiiiiiggg deal, idk.....

Thanks for all the good answers, it's really hard to choose a best one, because theres always multiple good ones, so I just hope I do stick to my roots and If I do have a drink when I'm a little bit older (I'm almost 15, June 4th) I want to do it wher my parents can see me, but that feels so low to me... so that probably won't happen. It's like why get a Strawberry Daquiri was a Virgin one taste just as good... The police officer came into our health class to talk about alcohol, and he said, "It's more fun to watch people drunk, then be drunk", so why drink.. idk, thanks for you answers.

Alcohol continues to be one of the last "taboo" drugs still legalized by society at large , with certain constrains.
The drinking age in many parts of the country used to be 18, so a lot of teens think this is when they should start - since it has been "arbitrarily" increased to 21 in many states. Much of the change has to due with how alcohol has been abused by your prior generation - if it has, chances are your governmental representatives will petition the law to increase the drinking age. That and a more litigious society will make the laws regarding this substance more strict.
Alcohol has been used for centuries for recreational purposes - the term symposium means "drinking party" where the free flow of ideas (and ignorance) would expose the truth.
In modern times, mankind has banned most other "mind-altering" substances, except alcohol which, is easily made, widely promoted, and endorced by major companies with monumental power. There are probably lesser drugs that are less harmful but more illegal than alcohol, but the histroy of these substances has been such that were deemed dangerous to the mores of society.
Don't feel guilty about having a drink now and then though, science has proved a little alcohol is probably good for you - thins the blood. You are in one of the most restrictive times in the history of drugs and alcohol - at one time, at least in New York City, if you were old enough to reach the bar you could order a drink. European and third world countries are a little more "enlightened" regarding substance use - either alcohol or other substances are readily used (and abused). That is just the nature of cultural differences - you will experience this quandry as you grow up....
Teens dont really have a lot of places they can go to let loose and have some fun. That's why teen parties are a favorite. They can hang out with their friends and have some fun.
Good for you. I started drinking at 16, because i was hanging out with an older crowd, and it was easily available, and what do you know, who ended up with an alcohol problem? Its proven that people who start drinking early are more prone to alcoholism(especially if it runs in your family like me) So stick to your guns, maybe you can help other friends when they feel pressured, if they see that you arent drinking, they wont feel so bad.It would have been much more fun if i had waited until i could legally do it, my 21st was kind of a bummer.
It's called the "forbidden fruit" effect. We tend to want things that we're forbidden to have.
In many parts of Europe, young people are allowed to drink a small amount of alcohol along with dinner (typically wine, beer), and generally speaking they have less problems with their kids sneaking off and getting totally inebriated with their friends.
Just keep in mind that alcohol's effect is due to its toxic nature and that will hopefully be enough to keep you from overindulging, if you ever do.
As a teenager myself, it occurs to me that it is a right of passage, in a sense. Everyone else is doing it, so now to be "cool", you have to go to parties and drink. The ironic thing is that if a teen is mature enough to drink, they make the right choice not to, but those who aren't mature assume they are and go all out. The best solution to the pressure of drinking is to get some friends who associate on the same level with you and have clean fun with them.
because sometimes our parents don't care I know I shouldn't and I'm a teen and I drink. Some times it just feels good to drink.
teens drink to fit in, feel good, and to feel more adult. it really isnt a big deal aslong as you only do it on the weekends and obviously dont drink and drive. at first i did it to fit in but then i really just enjoyed the taste and feeling i got from it. underage drinking wouldnt be a big deal if they lowered the drinking age to 18. i mean once your 18 you can lose your life defending your country but cant have a beer to celebrate. i will never see the point in that
As a teenager I didn't do a lot of drinking until I made it to college. I think the main appeal in underage drinking comes from its rebellious nature. Teenagers love to do things that make them feel rebellious and dangerous, and drinking definetely fits into that. Granted I've shared drinks with my family before I turned 21, but there's a certain lure to underage drinking I think. It's actually kinda weird, a lot of people stop drinking once they turn 21 because it's legal and they don't have to worry about being caught.
I applaud you for having some morals about underage drinking, a lot of people my age didn't give it a second thought, and it was sad to not see them care about the danger they could potentially get themselves into. For some teenagers it makes them feel more important, they can hang out and act like the "big kids" now if they have some alcohol in them. In my opinion there's nothing really special about drinking in particular, you just shouldn't drive if you plan to...I never really understood the hype of underage drinking personally.
